Sorting your deeds

Deeds are stored in the order you enter them (assuming you use the Edit Append Deed command to add new deeds.) Sometimes it’s useful to reorder the deeds, perhaps by date, book and page, or surname. DeedMapper allows you to temporarily sort the deeds, or permanently sort them, based on a number of attributes of the deeds. Temporary sorts are forgotten as soon as you leave DeedMapper, whereas permanent sorts will be re-established the next time you start the program and open the deed file.

To temporarily sort the deeds

1.    Go to the Table View (F7 shortcut key)

2.    Click once on the column heading you wish to sort by. For example, to sort by the surname of the buyer, click on the column head labeled To.

3.    To reverse the sort order, click once more on the same column head.

4.    To restore the sort order, click once on the column head labeled Item.

The above instructions assume you’ve set up the Table View to display one or more columns that are interesting for sorting purposes. See the Table View for more information.

If you sort on a date be aware that in the years prior to 1752, dates from January 1st to March 24th are interpreted as Old Style and are converted to New Style for sorting purposes.  For example, February 11, 1732 (or 1732/33) is treated as February 11, 1733.  This is done in order to give a more natural sorting order.  The English speaking world used the Julian calendar until 1752 when it converted to the Gregorian.  This resulted in January 1st becoming the first day of the new year rather than March 25th as had been the custom.

To permanently sort the deeds

1.    Perform a temporary sort (see instructions above)

2.    Open the Tools menu and select the Sort command, then Permanent.

3.    You’ll be asked to confirm the sort operation. Press OK.

4.    Open the File menu and select the Save command.
