Navigating in the Plot View

North is toward the top of the Plot View window. A northward move means the area you view is more northerly than before. (It does not mean the map is moved to the north.)

In addition to the arrow keys on your keyboard and in the toolbar, the following navigation techniques can be used.

Scrollbars

The scrollbars at the right and bottom sides of the view can be used to reposition the view.  In addition to general navigation, they are useful for fine tuning the position prior to printout.

Mouse Scroll Wheel

The mouse scroll wheel can be used to move north-south (up and down) in the Plot View.  If you hold the Ctrl key while using the scroll wheel you will zoom into or out of the view.

Jumping to the selected Plot, Map, or Text Annotation

If you are at low magnification (viewing a large area) and you select a plot, map, or text annotation by clicking on it, you can Jump to the selected item by typing the letter J or clicking on the Jump button Description: Description: Description: Description: jumpto in the Toolbar. This causes the plot, map, or annotation to be put in the center of the screen.

This can be quite useful, particularly for "visiting" a plot found with the Find command; simply type J to go to it.

The jump feature can sometimes surprise you. If you have an item (plot, annotation, map) selected anywhere, on or off screen, and you type J, the Plot View will suddenly move so that the selected item appears in the center of the screen.

"Point and Click" Centering

You can have DeedMapper center the Plot View display on any point of interest to you. Simply place the mouse cursor on the desired point and click the right button.  Select Jump to Mouse.  This command can be used for general navigation, or for fine-tuning the display prior to making printouts.

Grabbing the Plot View and panning

There are two ways you can pan the Plot View background.

The first is to enter Panning Mode by pressing the Grab Hand button  in the toolbar.  You’ll see that the mouse cursor changes to a grab hand.  You can then press the left mouse button down anywhere in the Plot View and drag the Plot View.  This allows you to quickly reposition the view.    Note that when the Grab Hand button is pressed you cannot select objects in the Plot View.  In order to select objects you must press the Pointer button.

You can temporarily enter Panning Mode while the Pointer button is pressed.  Just press the Ctrl and Shift keys simultaneously.  You’ll see the cursor change to the grab hand, allowing you to pan the view.   Release the Ctrl and Shift keys to return to Pointer Mode.
