Distances

Distances consist of a number, a measurement unit, and a semicolon, with no spaces. The number can contain a decimal point. Measurement units can be one of:

p (poles, perches)

r (rods)

f (feet)

c (chains)

l (links)

m (meters)

v (varas)

a (arpents)

y (yards)

u (user defined unit. See User Defined Length)

If no measurement unit is given, poles (rods, perches) are assumed. Links are used only in conjunction with p, r, or c, and must be the second unit.  Note that the Deed Entry Form does not support the use of links.  You must use the Text View to enter links.  If you use u, you must have a Len in the Abstracting section of the item, or in an Include Item.

Examples of legal distances:

10p; 7r; 3C6L; 98.6f; 14v; 3;

Examples of illegal distances:

13L6C;      links must come after chains

198¼f;      DeedMapper does not understand fractions

124 poles; DeedMapper does not understand ‘poles’ and there’s an extra space

75 C;       there must not be a space between the distance and the unit

26          there’s no semicolon to end the distance

If the line has no distance value ("thence Northeast to a white oak"), you must enter a semicolon to indicate the missing distance, e.g. Ln NE; ;
